Caring for & Storing Your Artificial Christmas Tree
Share
A little care goes a long way when it comes to keeping your Christmas tree looking beautiful year after year.
Your tree will spend most of its life tucked away, so how you pack and store it after Christmas can make just as much difference as how you decorate it.
Before you pack it away
Once the decorations are down, give your tree a little time and attention before putting it away.
Remove all decorations carefully.
Check the branches for forgotten hooks, ribbons or other decorations before packing your tree away.
Give it a gentle dust.
Over the course of the season, your tree can collect a little dust. A soft cloth, feather duster or gentle brush is usually all that's needed.
Make sure it's completely dry.
If you've used any cleaning product or your tree has been exposed to moisture, allow it to dry completely before storing.
How to pack your tree
If your tree comes in sections, separate them carefully and follow the manufacturer's instructions for packing.
Avoid forcing branches into a tightly compressed position. Artificial branches are designed to flex, but repeatedly crushing them can affect their shape over time.
If possible, store your tree in its original box or a suitable Christmas tree storage bag that gives the branches enough room.
Don't store heavy items on top of your tree.
Boxes or other items pressing down on the tree for months at a time can flatten branches and affect its shape.
Choose the right place to store it
The ideal storage spot is cool, dry and protected from moisture.
A dry cupboard, wardrobe, garage or storage area can work well, provided the space doesn't experience excessive dampness or extreme temperatures.
Avoid storing your tree somewhere where it could be exposed to:
- Water or persistent damp
- Leaks or condensation
- Direct sunlight for long periods
- Heavy items that could crush the branches
Moisture is particularly worth avoiding, as it can affect metal components and other materials over time.
Bringing your tree out next Christmas
When it's time to decorate again, give your tree a little room to breathe.
As you assemble each section, gently open and shape the branches. Don't worry if the tree looks a little flat straight out of storage — this is completely normal.
Take your time working from the inside of the tree outwards, spreading the branches and tips until the tree has the fullness and shape you're looking for.
The first time you shape your tree can take a little patience, but once you've done it you'll know exactly how to create its best shape each year.
A little care, for many Christmases
An artificial Christmas tree is something you can enjoy for many years, and looking after it well helps it stay beautiful for longer.
Pack it away carefully, keep it dry and give the branches a little attention each Christmas.
Then, when December comes around again, there's something rather lovely about opening the box and finding your tree waiting for you.
Ready for another Christmas.
